How long does a solar battery last for?

The lifespan of a solar battery depends on several factors, including battery type, operating temperature, usage and maintenance.

Solar batteries generally last between five and 15 years. Not all solar batteries are the same – there are a few different chemistries on the market and a great benefit of lithium-ion batteries is that they tend to have a longer life span compared with other types of solar batteries, such as those with lead acid chemistry.

For optimal lifespan, batteries should always be charged and discharged within the specified voltage, current and temperature ranges, which can typically be found in the technical manual. Extreme temperatures can reduce the life of solar batteries, so to begin with, qualified technicians will install them in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight.

If usage is in line with recommended specifications on cycling, battery longevity is more likely. A ‘cycle’ is where the battery’s energy is depleted to a certain depth of discharge, then recharged. The ‘cycle life’ of a battery relates to the number of cycles (to a specified depth of discharge) that a battery can undergo before failing to meet its specified capacity.

RedEarth Energy Storage’s own battery, Troppo, have an internal Battery Management System (BMS) that protects the battery against operation over and under the recommended temperatures, voltage, and current. It also extends the service life of the battery through internal balancing of the individual cell strings.

Finally, regular maintenance – checking the battery system every six months – will ensure that your solar battery lives its best life.
